OC Bishop Jaime Soto & Illegal Aliens

There are a lot things wrong with the Catholic Church. I have documented and linked here numerous stories of sexual abuse by priests and their bosses(Cardinal Mahony stands out on this) that cover it up.

One of the other galling thing about the church is their total disregard for our immigration laws. Many parish churches have actually become "sanctuary" churches in this battle. They harbor illegals scheduled for deportation with the thinking that the government won't come in a la Elian Gonzales and snatch the fugitives while they are actually on church property. Well today Bishop Soto has come out for Catholics to fast at least one day a week and sign a pledge card that gets sent to congressmen advocating "reform" (read as amnesty of course) of the immigration laws. Once again Bishop Soto, the only reform that needs to be done is for the current laws to be enforced. This could be the start of a downturn in the tortilla, taco, burrito, & mexican food business. I would hate to have that happen. I have an idea. Instead of fasting, why doesn't everyone who advocates enforcing the laws get together and throw a huge bachnallian feast in opposition to Bishop Soto's directive. This could be fun. To rub salt in the wounds we should try to make sure we do this on a Friday and the meal should a huge prime rib, porterhouse, or filet mignon steak. Who's with me?

    Allan,
I apologize for not responding in a couple of days. I am very busy at work right now, but will post a rebuttal tomorrow.

I also have a lot of problems with the Catholic church. 40 years ago when my dad remarried after my mother’s death, he married a lifelong Catholic woman. Since my dad had been divorced before marrying my mom, the priest at this woman’s Catholic church had a problem with them getting married in the Catholic church. My dad’s name was not KENNEDY! However, the priest said that if they paid $10,000 (this is in 1966) that he would OK it. The woman was so furious that she told the priest to STICK IT! For the rest of her life (32 more years) she NEVER EVER entered a Catholic church again!

The Catholic church’s opposition to birth control and abortion seems, like it’s views on illegal immigration, to be designed simply to increase the number of Catholics regardless of problems it causes. The rule that when a Catholic marries a non-Catholic, the non-Catholic must change and the kids be raised Catholic seems very autocratic. Instead of encouraging freedom of choice, the Catholic church is all about POWER.

Like most churches it does some good works. However, overall I believe it is not a force for good. The Catholic church views itself as the preeminate church in America and the world and expects to be treated that way. It is basically a DICTATORSHIP that requires blind adherence to it’s dogma and has caused many problems.

So many wars have been fought about religion that I’m really tired of so many people just blindly following what their religious leaders tell them no matter how outlandish.

No problems Luis. I think we've mixed it up pretty good so far.

I absolutely love it - mocking the spirit of Lent AND sounding vaguely WASPish with the filet mignon vs. tacos remark.

On the other hand, I'm never against consuming excellent cuts of beef. So enjoy your true-blue, all-Merican meals!

    Observing your taco-hating heart,

    DU

You need to find a sense of humor ME. I'm poking fun at the Bishop's & Church's ridiculous policies. BTW, I love tacos & Mexican food in general and I'm not giving up that either!

One should realize that there is not a single country in the world which is dominated by Catholic Church and is economically prosperous.

That itself is strong testimony about wrongful influence which catholics impose on the humanity.

This is the most profound statement I have read regarding the church. I agree completely. I went to catholic school. But the institution I know as the catholic church is nothing like anything I read about the teachings of Jesus Christ.

You guys have got to be kidding me? Where is your intellect?

Be assured that our prayers are with you, ignorant as your statements may be. That goes to all your supporters as well, and anyone who is only willing to investigate Church policies as far as required to form a seemingly articulate, opposing stance, to be read and enjoyed by other uninformed, intellectual masterbaters. May Almighty God bless you and yours, in spite of who you are.
